DMT has a rapid onset, powerful effects, and a short duration of action. For these reasons, DMT was dubbed the “business trip” in the 1960s in the United States, since it allowed users to access the entire depth of a psychedelic experience in considerably less time than other substances like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms. DMT can be inhaled, eaten, or injected, and its effects vary according to dosage and route of administration. The effects last just five to fifteen minutes when inhaled or injected. When coupled with an MAOI, such as the ayahuasca drink used by many indigenous Amazonian groups, the effects can last three hours or longer.
